Wait…..so you mean all I need to succeed is a Goose & Tonic????

This week’s video is a shout out to my fellow professionals whose companies are catching on to the latest trend; BYOB.  It’s kind of like bring your child to work day, but for alcoholics.  I kid….I kid.  But seriously, the idea of bringing the happy hour to the break room is popping up all over the country.  According to the Huffington Post, even AOL offers a beer cart.

As cool as that may sound to those of us who DON’t work in that environment, for those who do, it can be a hairy situation.  Is participating in a friendly game of beer pong at work with your boss a career “Do” or a career “Don’t”?  Grab your drink of choice and find out in this week’s vid.

Can’t play the vid right now?  Dang!  Ok, skim this…

Be strategic

Scope out the scene to see if this office happy hour is really for you.  You’re career driven and every moment at work is an opportunity.  So if people of influence are going, you’d better make your way over there.  If the office party crew are the only ones surrounding the kegerator, take the happy hour offsite.

Build relationships

If you do decide to go, don’t make it all work and no play.  Take the opportunity to get to know key influencers and colleagues.  This can be a great relationship builder.

Don’t get toasted

Look, just because there’s a bottle of wine on a conference table, doesn’t mean you’re no longer at work.  Keep it classy, not trashy and set a drink maximum for yourself.  Even better, play it safe and drink faux real with cranberry juice with lime, or a sparkling water with lemon.  No one will know you’re alcohol free for the night.

Now comes the fun part, I get to listen to you!  So tell me, was this helpful?  Leave a comment below, share your thoughts with other viewers and sign up for email updates.  You never know how your voice will impact someone’s life.  Need some personalized career attention?  Work with me and get 10x the career love and attention.
