If you’re trying to change a negative first (or second….or third) impression, this video’s for you.
Changing negative impressions is tough, but definitely doable. You’re up against a natural psychological phenomenon known as fundamental attribution error. Our brain is saving space and time by generalizing initial characteristics as fundamental elements of your character. It may be efficient but not accessorily accurate.
Your best plan is to flood people’s brains with tons of positive moments to counteract their negative data points. So let’s get started….
Catch them by surprise
Do things that are contrary to their negative assumption of you. For example, if people believe you don;t follow up timely enough, totally become “Janie on the spot”
Overdo it for an extended period of time
The contrary behavior we discussed above needs to be sustained for longer than the period of time it took to create the negative impression.
Build quality positive relationships
You natural instinct may be to avoid co-workers you’re not clicking with, but go out of your way to establish quality relationships with them, instead. When you have great relationships, people are more likely to give you pats one the back for your awesome moments and cut you some slack when things go a little awry.
